Indonesia’s Vice President, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, called on G-20 member countries to begin global discussions on cryptocurrency assets and digital tokens. He delivered this appeal while presenting his views at the G-20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Saturday (Nov 22, 2025).

“New technologies such as crypto assets and digital tokens—including Bitcoin—offer both opportunities and risks. Therefore, Indonesia urges the G-20 to start a dialogue on this intelligence economy,” Gibran stated, as quoted by Bloomberg Technoz.

He emphasized that cryptocurrencies and digital tokens have now become an essential element in the development of the intelligence economy. For this reason, Indonesia encourages the G-20 to establish a joint dialogue to ensure digital innovation can advance without compromising security and stability.

Gibran highlighted that each country has a different digital landscape, which means crypto regulations cannot be standardized across nations. Even so, international coordination remains necessary to prevent technological progress from creating inequality or enabling misuse on a global scale.

Calling on the G-20 to Build a Global Digital Asset Dialogue

Gibran noted that crypto assets now play a role in cross-border economic activity and are already widely used by communities around the world. Therefore, a dialogue framework is needed to allow the G-20 to discuss regulatory direction, consumer protection, and the potential of digital assets to strengthen the global economy.

He stressed that Indonesia is ready to contribute to pushing these discussions forward, particularly because digital asset adoption within the country continues to grow and has become part of the national digital economic transformation.

In addition to cryptocurrency, Gibran highlighted the importance of preparing digital payment infrastructure to support future adoption of digital assets. He cited the success of the QRIS payment system, which has expanded digital inclusion for millions of Indonesians.

Gibran also expressed appreciation to South Africa for hosting the first G-20 Summit on the African continent, viewing this moment as a significant opportunity for Global South nations to take a more active role in shaping global policy directions, including those related to crypto assets and digital technologies.

He emphasized that the Global South is no longer merely observing but is beginning to emerge as a driving force in global discussions on digital and economic issues.

Through this initiative, Indonesia positions itself as one of the countries seeking to ensure that the development of crypto assets and digital tokens proceeds safely, inclusively, and in ways that benefit society at large.
