Vanguard Changes Course: Now Allows Trading of Crypto-Based ETFs and Mutual Funds
In a move that has surprised the global financial industry, Vanguard one of the world’s largest asset managers—has officially shifted its strategy by opening access to trading crypto-based ETFs and mutual funds, including those tied to Bitcoin. This decision signals that the crypto market is becoming more established and that demand from both retail and institutional investors continues to grow.
Vanguard’s Shift in Stance
Until now, Vanguard has been known as an institution that consistently rejected cryptocurrency-related services due to the market’s extreme volatility and speculative nature. However, on December 2, 2025, the company announced that its brokerage platform now permits transactions of third-party ETFs and mutual funds with exposure to assets such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), XRP, and Solana (SOL). More than 50 million Vanguard clients can now buy and sell these products.
Nevertheless, Vanguard emphasized that it does not plan to issue its own crypto products. All available crypto instruments are managed by external providers, and high-risk assets such as “meme coins” will remain excluded from the platform.
The Strategic Reasons Behind Vanguard’s Decision
According to the company’s internal statement, this policy shift is driven by three main factors:
1. A More Stable Crypto Market Infrastructure
Crypto ETFs and funds have demonstrated resilience through various periods of volatility while maintaining liquidity and functioning as designed.
2. Strengthening Investor Demand
Growing interest from both retail and institutional investors has compelled Vanguard to reconsider its long-standing conservative approach.
3. A Global Shift in Portfolio Preferences
The company has observed a broader investor movement toward alternative assets and a greater need for diversified portfolios.
A Major Turning Point for Traditional Finance and Crypto
Vanguard’s decision to open access to Bitcoin and crypto ETFs is more than just a policy change—it reflects a paradigm shift in the global financial landscape. For investors, this move provides a new, regulated, and familiar channel to gain exposure to digital assets. For the crypto industry, Vanguard’s entry could serve as a crucial catalyst for mass adoption and deeper integration into the traditional financial system.
