DIGIVESTASI - After his inauguration on January 20, U.S. President Donald Trump immediately issued a series of executive orders addressing various critical issues. These actions are expected to impact millions of people, both U.S. citizens and non-citizens.
Among Trump’s signed orders are those focusing on illegal immigration, federal workforce policies, energy and the environment, gender and diversity issues, as well as pardons for individuals involved in the January 2021 Capitol riots. Here are some of the key decisions as reported by Reuters on Thursday (1/23/2025).
Trump declared a national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border and banned asylum applications from migrants deemed to be “involved in an invasion across the southern border.” He directed the Department of Defense to expedite the construction of the border wall, shut down detention facilities, and transport migrants, with authorization to deploy troops to the border if necessary.
He also suspended the acceptance of refugees into the U.S., canceling the arrival of nearly 1,660 Afghan individuals who were set to resettle in America. Trump reinstated the "Remain in Mexico" policy, requiring asylum seekers to stay in Mexico while their U.S. cases are processed, a policy that has now been put back into effect.
Additionally, Trump proposed capital punishment for undocumented immigrants involved in serious crimes and ended “birthright citizenship” for children born in the U.S. to non-citizen or non-resident parents.
Trump ordered federal workers to return to offices, ending the work-from-home (WFH) policies. He imposed a federal hiring freeze except in the military, immigration, national security, and public safety sectors. Moreover, he reinstated executive orders that ease the process for firing government employees.
Trump signed an order eliminating diversity programs within the government, closing all offices related to diversity, equity, and inclusion. He reversed policies implemented by the Biden administration allowing transgender individuals to serve in the military and approved recognition of only two genders, male and female, in official documents.
Trump declared a national energy emergency to boost domestic energy production by rescinding regulations promoting the transition to electric vehicles. He ordered oil and gas developments in Alaska and repealed protections put in place by previous administrations for the Arctic and U.S. coastal waters.
Trump instructed the U.S. to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement, a move he also made during his first term but was later reversed by the Biden administration.
Trump directed his administration to begin the process of withdrawing from the World Health Organization (WHO), claiming that the global health body failed to effectively address the COVID-19 pandemic and other health crises.
Trump granted pardons to approximately 1,500 of his supporters involved in the Capitol riots, including leaders of right-wing groups such as the Oath Keepers and Proud Boys, many of whom had been convicted for their roles in the events.
Trump signed an executive order delaying the ban on the TikTok app for 75 days, previously set to go into effect on January 19. He also established an advisory body named the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to initiate significant reductions in the U.S. government, which could lead to legal challenges depending on its implementation.
