Rising Digital Threats, Government Forms Child Protection Task Force in the Online Sphere

Online gambling, pornography, bullying, and sexual violence are becoming increasingly serious threats to Indonesian children in the digital age. Without strict regulations and adequate protection, they remain highly vulnerable to online exploitation and cybercrime.

To address this concern, Indonesia’s Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs (Menkomdigi), Meutya Hafid, has taken proactive measures by establishing the Child Protection Regulation Strengthening Task Force in the Digital Realm.

"We cannot allow children to grow up in a digital environment full of threats. The government is here to ensure they are protected. This task force will strengthen regulations, enhance supervision, and take firm action against harmful content, ensuring Indonesian children can access the internet safely," said Meutya Hafid in Jakarta on Sunday (February 2, 2025).

This initiative aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive, emphasizing the urgency of child protection in the digital space. The President has instructed that related regulations be finalized within one to two months.

One key aspect being considered in the regulation is age restrictions for children using social media to reduce exposure to harmful content. Additionally, enhanced oversight of digital platforms that grant children access is also being prioritized.

In formulating these policies, Menkomdigi is collaborating with the Minister of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection, the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, as well as the Minister of Health. All involved ministries share the same vision of accelerating child protection efforts in the digital sphere.

Three Main Focus Areas of the Task Force

The Child Protection Regulation Strengthening Task Force consists of representatives from the government, academia, practitioners, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) specializing in child protection. The team will focus on three key areas:

  1. Strengthening regulations and supervision of digital platforms that provide access to children.
  2. Enhancing digital literacy for both children and parents to increase awareness of online risks.
  3. Strict enforcement against perpetrators and distributors of harmful content that threaten children's safety.

The government hopes this initiative will foster a safer digital ecosystem for Indonesia’s younger generation.
