Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, stated firmly that there will no longer be any nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States.

In an interview with PBS News on Monday (9/3), Araghchi said that Iran’s bitter experience of being betrayed twice by the United States was enough reason to end further talks with Washington.

“You know, we have had a very bitter experience in dealing with the Americans,” Araghchi said, as quoted by Anadolu Agency.

“Therefore, I believe that talking with the United States again will no longer be part of our agenda.”

Araghchi’s statement referred to the 12-day war between Iran and Israel in June 2025, during which Tehran was engaged in nuclear negotiations with the United States. When the conflict broke out, the United States joined Israel in attacking Iran and destroying several of Tehran’s nuclear facilities.

Before the current conflict erupted, Iran and the United States were also in the third round of negotiations which, according to Oman as the mediator, had been progressing constructively. However, Israel and the United States once again launched attacks against Iran, even killing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

On Monday (9/3), Iran appointed a new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Khamenei.

When asked whether Mojtaba might be open to negotiations or a ceasefire, Araghchi declined to comment. According to him, it was still too early for Mojtaba to make any public statements.

However, Araghchi expressed certainty about one thing: Mojtaba has no intention of engaging in dialogue with the United States, especially after what he recently experienced. In addition to Khamenei, Mojtaba’s mother, wife, child, and sister were also killed in the brutal attacks carried out by the United States and Israel.

Regarding the surge in global oil prices

Araghchi was also asked about the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which has driven global oil prices sharply higher. In response, he argued that the energy crisis was caused by the actions of the United States and Israel.

“[Disruptions to oil production and transportation] are occurring because of the attacks and aggression carried out by Israel and the United States against us,” Araghchi said.

He added that the actions of both countries have made the entire Middle East region unsafe.

“That is why oil tankers and other vessels are afraid to pass through the Strait of Hormuz,” he said, while emphasizing that Iran itself has not closed the vital shipping route.

Araghchi also stated that Iran had previously warned that any attack against Tehran would be answered by targeting enemy assets in the region. He stressed that Iran’s current actions are purely acts of self-defense.

“We are facing aggression that is completely illegal, and what we are doing is a legitimate and lawful act of self-defense,” he emphasized.

He further stated that Iran had already warned all countries in the region that if the United States attacked Iran, and since Iran cannot directly reach American territory, it would strike U.S. bases located within the region.

He then added, “As a result, the war could spread across the entire region. We are not responsible for that.”
