Natural disasters are often viewed as the consequences of harmful human actions driven by the desire to exploit nature for profit. However, the world’s Crazy Rich individuals have different ways of spending their fortunes.
One example is Johan Eliasch, a Swedish-born billionaire who purchased 400,000 hectares of the Amazon rainforest in 2006—an area equivalent in size to the city of London!
According to The Guardian, Eliasch decided to acquire the Amazon land to help preserve what is widely known as the “lungs of the Earth.” Through the purchase, he is able to protect the trees and the wildlife that inhabit the forest.
He explained that he has long been interested in environmental issues. Growing up in Stockholm, Eliasch used to walk out the front door of his home and ski from late October until April.
“Now in Stockholm, you can’t ski at all.”
“I think it’s absurd. For example, today if you own a forest, you’re encouraged to cut everything down and then replant it. That way, you earn money by selling the timber. And when you replant, you also make money from carbon credits. Isn’t that strange?”
When asked what it feels like to own such a massive rainforest, Eliasch replied with a small laugh, “It is something extremely valuable and at the same time a great responsibility.”
“The forest isn’t truly personal property, not something you encounter every day.”
In his interview with The Guardian, Eliasch revealed that the Amazon land he purchased was previously owned by a logging company. “I shut down the company’s operations and laid off 1,000 people... in order to save the forest.”
Even so, Eliasch admitted he experienced a dilemma between protecting the forest and providing jobs for local residents who rely on employment for survival. Ultimately, he chose to preserve the forest using his wealth.
Eliasch also stated that he hired a monitoring team to ensure local residents do not enter the forest to conduct illegal logging.
