President Donald Trump indicated that the United States could potentially take control of Iran’s oil and easily seize the country’s main export hub on Kharg Island. This statement came as the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran entered its fifth week.

In an interview with the Financial Times on Sunday (March 29, 2026), Trump said he is considering a move to take control of Iran’s energy resources.

He stated that he believes Iran lacks sufficient defense, suggesting that the United States could take it over with ease.

Trump added that his preference would be to “take the oil,” comparing the idea to a US military operation in Venezuela earlier this year, when Washington effectively gained control of the country’s oil industry following the arrest of its leader, Nicolas Maduro.

Trump’s remarks come as the conflict between the US and Israel against Iran continues to expand across the region, raising risks to energy sectors and infrastructure. This situation has also contributed to a surge in global crude oil prices.

May futures contracts for the international Brent benchmark rose 2.92% to US$115.86 per barrel during early Asian trading. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate futures climbed 3.20% to US$102.80 per barrel.

A report by The Washington Post on Saturday night also noted that the Pentagon is preparing for the possibility of a ground conflict in Iran that could last for weeks, alongside the deployment of thousands of US troops to the region.
