Indonesia Holds Off Clean Electricity Exports to Singapore, Minister Demands Reciprocity

The Indonesian government is still withholding export permits for clean electricity from renewable energy sources (EBT) to Singapore. Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia emphasized that this decision was made because Singapore has not yet provided clear reciprocal benefits to Indonesia.

Bahlil revealed that he had met with the Singaporean minister and expressed Indonesia’s willingness to export electricity under specific conditions.

"I told him, I'll send you renewable energy from Riau Islands, okay. They also want carbon capture storage (CCS) from industries in Riau, and I agreed. But I asked, what will Singapore give Indonesia in return? You keep asking, but you never say what you’re offering us," Bahlil stated at the Mandiri Investment Forum (MIF) 2025, Thursday (Feb 13, 2025).

However, Bahlil did not specify what kind of reciprocal benefits Indonesia expects from Singapore. He only emphasized that any agreement must be mutually beneficial.

"Don't create the perception that we are not supportive. We are not only supporting Singapore, we are carrying them. But as we carry them, we have yet to see any indication that they are willing to carry us too," he added.

Bahlil stressed that the process must be fair, ensuring that both Indonesia and Singapore benefit from this energy partnership.
