U.S. President Donald Trump issued an order on Friday (Nov 14, 2025) to reduce import tariffs on beef, tomatoes, coffee, and bananas. The directive aims to bring down food costs as the administration faces pressure from voters demanding lower prices for everyday necessities. The tariff exemptions will cut trade duties on commodities that, according to the White House, cannot be produced in sufficient quantities within the U.S. to meet domestic demand.
Hundreds of other food products—including coconuts, nuts, avocados, and pineapples—are among the items listed by the government to be granted tariff relief. This tariff removal is retroactive and officially takes effect at 12:01 a.m. New York time on November 13, 2025. The move comes as Trump begins shifting his focus toward affordability measures, with voters increasingly concerned about the economic situation under his leadership.
It also serves as a tacit acknowledgment that the president’s tariff policies have added price pressures for American consumers. A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said that the president is fulfilling his promise to renegotiate trade agreements and adjust tariffs when necessary.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer hinted at the plan, stating that the initiative aligns with Trump’s broader strategy to establish tariff exemptions for key goods and sectors. “Now is the right moment to lift some of the items the president has previously indicated would be exempted.
This is the natural outcome of the direction he has signaled, and that’s exactly what he is doing today,” Greer told Bloomberg on Saturday (Nov 15, 2025). Trump and senior U.S. officials have consistently dismissed criticism that their trade policies have raised the cost of living, though they acknowledge the need to take further action to ease the high prices that have long frustrated voters.
Trump has repeatedly argued that his tariff policies bring substantial benefits to the United States. He believes that import taxes are partially offset by lower selling prices, thereby reducing the policy’s impact on consumers. Meanwhile, last week several Republican candidates aligned with Trump suffered losses in key state and local elections, where their opponents emphasized policies aimed at addressing affordability concerns.
