DIGIVESTASI - The development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology is progressing in China. In fact, Baidu CEO Robin Li as quoted by CNBC International, Tuesday (16/4/2024), said Ernie Bot, which is similar to ChatGPT, has reached 200 million users.

In comparison, there were about 180.5 million registered ChatGPT users in March 2024, according to a DemandSage report. Baidu launched Ernie Bot more than a year ago. In August 2023, the service got the green light for mass use from Beijing.

Chatobt is based on Baidu's Large Scale Language Model (LLM) called Ernie. Smartphone companies like Samsung and Honor are integrating Ernie's AI capabilities into some of their phone models sold in China.

Baidu admitted that as of December last year, about 26,000 companies actively accessed AI Ernie every month. In addition, Ernie is supposed to answer 50 million questions every day. "By 2024, we expect AI to increasingly contribute to the company's revenue. We will also continue to expand our core business," Lee said in a meeting with investors, according to a FactSet transcript.

Baidu will announce its 2024 first quarter results on May 16, 2024.
The AI battle between China and the US escalated the geopolitical tensions between the two countries. The United States is blocking China's access to purchase advanced chips and chip-making tools for AI development.  President Joe Biden's administration wants to curb AI development in China due to concerns it could threaten national security.
