Indonesia and Turkey Agree on Drone Factory Development

President Prabowo Subianto and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held a bilateral meeting at the Bogor Presidential Palace on Wednesday (Feb 12, 2025) to discuss strategic partnerships, particularly in the defense sector. During the meeting, both nations reached an agreement to establish a drone manufacturing facility in Indonesia, in collaboration between Republikorp, an Indonesian defense company, and Baykar, a leading Turkish defense firm.

The agreement was formalized through a joint venture contract, signed by Baykar CEO Haluk Bayraktar and Republikorp Chairman Norman Joesoef, under the direct supervision of Presidents Prabowo and Erdogan.

"The joint venture between Republikorp and Baykar will facilitate the construction of a drone factory in Indonesia. We welcome both Republikorp’s Chairman and Baykar’s CEO for this signing," stated the event host.

A joint venture is a business collaboration between two or more entities for a specific period. Republikorp is a private Indonesian defense company, while Baykar is a Turkish defense firm renowned for its cutting-edge drone technology.

Prabowo Pushes for Defense Industry Co-Production

Beyond the joint venture, President Prabowo also advocated for joint production initiatives in the defense sector between Indonesia and Turkey. He highlighted that the bilateral cooperation in defense industries has been progressing well.

"Indonesia and Turkey’s collaboration in the defense sector is going very well. I recently met with top executives from Turkish defense companies in Istanbul last December," said Prabowo.

He also expressed gratitude to President Erdogan for his continuous support in strengthening defense industry ties.

"I appreciate President Erdogan’s assistance and support. I believe our defense industry partnership will continue to advance significantly," he added.

Furthermore, Prabowo urged President Erdogan’s backing in realizing the joint venture and joint production efforts. He noted that Indonesia already maintains strong partnerships with several leading Turkish defense companies.

"We seek Your Excellency’s support as we aim to establish more joint ventures with Turkish firms and collaborate on joint production in the defense industry. Indonesia has already developed solid cooperation with major Turkish companies such as Roketsan, Aselsan, Havelsan, and Baykar. We are committed to actively participating in ongoing defense programs with Turkey," Prabowo stated.

As part of his state visit to Indonesia on February 11-12, 2025, President Erdogan conducted a tete-a-tete meeting with President Prabowo before proceeding with a bilateral discussion, which included ministerial delegations from both countries.
