The phenomenon of altcoin season often serves as a momentum for digital assets other than Bitcoin to experience significant price surges. However, as the end of 2024 approaches, a major question arises among investors: Has the golden era of altcoins come to an end, or are there still major opportunities waiting in the coming year?

Bitcoin Dominance and Altcoin Market Capitalization: Why Do They Matter?

One of the key factors determining the occurrence of an altcoin season is the movement of Bitcoin Dominance (BTCD). Historically, altcoins tend to experience substantial gains when BTCD undergoes a sharp decline.

Since September 2022, BTCD has been on an upward trend, reaching its peak in November 2024 at 61.53%. However, after hitting this high, BTCD only experienced a brief three-week decline before strengthening again. This pattern differs from previous cycles, where BTC typically saw a more drastic drop before altcoins began to dominate the market.

Additionally, in previous cycles, altcoin season was marked by altcoin market capitalization surpassing its previous all-time high. As of now, altcoin market capitalization has yet to reach a new peak, suggesting that the momentum for altcoin season has not yet fully materialized.

The Surge in Altcoin Supply Presents a New Challenge

One of the factors hindering altcoin season this time is the sheer number of altcoins circulating in the market. During the 2017–2018 cycle, there were only about 3,000 altcoins, whereas today, the number has skyrocketed to over 36.4 million cryptocurrencies.

With supply far exceeding demand, altcoin price volatility has become more controlled compared to previous cycles. Moreover, many altcoins are launched without clear utility, serving purely as speculative assets. This trend has made investors increasingly selective in choosing digital assets with long-term potential.

Could Altcoin Season Happen in 2025?

Although the current conditions do not fully support the emergence of an altcoin season, some analysts remain optimistic that 2025 could mark a resurgence for altcoins. Ethereum (ETH) is predicted to be one of the leaders of the next rally, especially as institutional interest in utility-based digital assets continues to grow.

However, for altcoin season to truly materialize, two key conditions must be met. First, BTCD needs to experience a significant decline to allow altcoin dominance to rise. Second, altcoin market capitalization must surpass its previous all-time high. If both conditions are met, altcoin season could make a strong comeback in 2025.
