Finance Minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa responded to views from several parties who linked the weakening of the rupiah against the US dollar to a supposedly unstable state budget (APBN). The rupiah has continued to depreciate and even surpassed the level of Rp17,400 per US dollar in trading on Tuesday (May 5, 2026).

Purbaya acknowledged that some observers associate the rupiah’s decline with Indonesia’s fiscal condition. However, he refrained from commenting further on monetary matters, emphasizing that such issues fall under the authority of Bank Indonesia (BI).

“Many people say Indonesia’s fiscal condition is weakening, which causes the rupiah to decline and so on. As for the rupiah, please ask BI, not me. They are the ones responsible for that,” Purbaya stated during the APBN KiTa press conference at the Ministry of Finance office in Central Jakarta on Tuesday (May 5, 2026).

On the other hand, Purbaya highlighted Indonesia’s strong energy resilience in facing global shocks. He claimed that Indonesia’s energy security currently ranks among the strongest globally, even placing second and outperforming major economies such as the United States, China, and Australia.

“If we look at energy resilience, our position is very strong. We rank second in terms of strength during a global crisis, even above the United States, China, and Australia,” he added.

From a fiscal perspective, the state budget deficit remains under control. Data shows that the deficit stands at Rp240.1 trillion, equivalent to 0.93% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Purbaya emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining the deficit below 3% throughout the year in line with fiscal design. He also warned against simplifying the figure by multiplying it by four to estimate the full-year projection.

“The current deficit is Rp240.1 trillion or 0.93% of GDP. But it should not be multiplied by four because annual spending and revenue cycles differ. What is certain is that we will keep it below 3% throughout the year in accordance with the APBN framework,” he explained.

In terms of performance, as of March 2026, the state budget is considered relatively expansionary. State revenue grew by around 10% year-on-year to Rp574.9 trillion. Tax revenue increased by 14% to Rp462 trillion, with tax collection alone reaching Rp394.8 trillion, reflecting a growth of 20.7%.
