Elon Musk Researches the Use of Blockchain for US Government Budget Efficiency

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and head of the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), is reportedly exploring the use of blockchain technology to track and reduce federal budget waste.

According to a Cointelegraph report on Monday, January 27, 2025, DOGE is also considering the application of blockchain to enhance data security, facilitate payment transactions, and manage government assets, as part of efforts to improve the department’s operational efficiency.

Members of this newly established non-government department have also met with representatives from public blockchain networks to discuss the potential use of the technology by the U.S. government.

This initiative is part of Elon Musk’s strategy to reduce annual U.S. spending by trillions of dollars, while also enhancing government accountability through transparency.

Blockchain Technology for Government Spending Transparency

The use of blockchain technology to increase transparency in U.S. government spending is not a new idea. In April 2024, former presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. proposed placing the entire U.S. federal budget on-chain. During a meeting in Michigan, Kennedy stated, "Every American citizen would be able to see every item in the budget at any time, 24 hours a day. Our budget would be monitored by 300 million people. If someone spends USD 16,000 on a toilet seat, everyone will know."

This proposal received broad support from those advocating for a more transparent government and healthier budget management, with many believing that the U.S. government’s spending has been out of control.
