North Korea stated on Tuesday (July 29) that the United States must acknowledge its status as a nuclear-armed state if Washington wishes to resume bilateral negotiations.

Kim Yo Jong, the influential sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, stressed that the U.S. must accept that circumstances have changed since the countries' past summits, and that no future talks would lead to the dismantling of North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.

She acknowledged that the personal relationship between Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump was not bad, but she also emphasized that any American attempt to pursue denuclearization of North Korea would be seen as an insult.

During the first summit between Trump and Kim, held in Singapore in 2018, both leaders signed a basic agreement aiming to achieve a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.

However, the subsequent summit in Hanoi in 2019 failed to yield an agreement due to disagreements over the lifting of international sanctions imposed on Pyongyang.
