McDonald's, as one of the most famous fast-food chains in the world, has successfully expanded its presence to various corners of the globe. Compared to its competitors, McDonald's holds the record with more than 40,000 outlets worldwide. However, there are several countries that explicitly prohibit McDonald's from operating within their borders. Here are some of them:

Bermuda

Before being declared illegal, a McDonald's outlet existed in Bermuda until 1995. However, there is not a single McDonald's restaurant in this small country now. Bermuda has had laws banning foreign fast-food restaurants since the 1970s. Although McDonald's briefly operated on the U.S. Naval Air Station in Bermuda in 1985, the outlet had to be closed in 1995 when the base itself was shut down.

Iran

Decades of tense relations between Iran and the United States have led to McDonald's, an American brand, being declared illegal in Iran since 1979. Ironically, Iran has created an alternative called "Mash Donald's."

Macedonia

Macedonia is a small country in the Balkan Peninsula in Southern Europe that has banned McDonald's. At one point, McDonald's had seven outlets in Macedonia, some of them in the capital city, Skopje. However, in 2013, the McDonald's franchise group was found to lack the necessary official licenses, resulting in the closure of all McDonald's outlets in Macedonia. Since then, the Macedonian government decided to discontinue its cooperation with McDonald's.

Yemen

The unstable economic conditions in Yemen have deterred McDonald's from opening outlets in the Middle Eastern country. Additionally, threats from extremist groups in Yemen have discouraged McDonald's from venturing into this region.

North Korea

Under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, North Korea has long restricted foreign influence, including iconic fast-food restaurants like McDonald's. Nevertheless, reports suggest that some North Korean government elites have managed to smuggle McDonald's items from South Korea for personal consumption.

Zimbabwe

In the year 2000, McDonald's attempted to introduce its brand in Zimbabwe during a severe economic crisis. However, McDonald's International Franchising stated that they had no concrete plans to open outlets in most African countries.

Iceland

McDonald's faced difficulties in Iceland in 2009 due to a major economic crisis and high import tariffs for ingredients, particularly meat, which is a primary component for the company. The Icelandic government was also reportedly unsupportive of McDonald's due to the country's strong focus on health issues. Nonetheless, rumors have circulated that McDonald's is contemplating reopening outlets in the country.

Bolivia

In contrast to other countries, McDonald's chose to withdraw from Bolivia, even though it was not directly banned by the government. This decision was made in 2002 due to poor sales. Bolivian residents were reported to be uninterested in buying burgers from a foreign corporation. At the time, the President of Bolivia accused McDonald's of prioritizing company profits over public health.

Although McDonald's dominates the fast-food market in many countries, there are nations where the restaurant chain has no opportunity to establish its presence, due to legal, political, or cultural reasons.
