North Korea (DPRK) has made two attempts to launch spy satellites into outer space, but unfortunately, both endeavors have ended in failure. This second attempt was carried out three months after the initial one, which resulted in the satellite plunging into the sea.
"This launch attempt has failed during the third stage of its flight," the statement was conveyed through the government media KCNA, quoted by the BBC, on Friday, August 25, 2023.
For North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un, spy satellites are highly coveted gifts. This is because these satellites would enable him to monitor potential attacks and plan responses with greater accuracy.
The Pyongyang space agency has announced plans for another attempt in the coming October.
South Korea reported that they successfully detected the rocket launch around 03:50 local time. According to reports from Seoul, the rocket flew through international airspace above the Yellow Sea, situated between mainland China and the Korean Peninsula.
This event triggered an emergency alert in Japan's southernmost Okinawa prefecture, only a few minutes after the incident. The Japanese government immediately urged its citizens to seek shelter indoors.
The alert was lifted after about 20 minutes passed.
In response to this incident, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida condemned it by stating, "Actions like these are contrary to UN resolutions, and we have strongly protested."
Meanwhile, the United States (US) urged North Korea to refrain from further "threatening activities" and called on Pyongyang to engage in more serious diplomacy.
However, despite the disappointment of the previous Thursday's failure for Pyongyang, it appears they have made progress.
In a report issued by KCNA, the failure was attributed to "errors in the emergency detonation system during the third stage of flight." The news agency also stated that this issue was "not a major problem."
It seems that the rocket carrying the satellite managed to travel farther than previous attempts. Officials in Pyongyang described the May experiment's failure as the "greatest failure" and pledged to try again.
And it's likely that Kim will persist with these efforts until he succeeds.
This launch event took place just a few days after the leaders of the United States, Japan, and South Korea met in a historic summit in Washington. It also occurred after the start of the annual military exercises between Washington and Seoul.
