DIGIVESTASI - Bahlil: 54% of Indonesia’s Fuel Still Imported from Singapore, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia revealed that more than half of Indonesia’s fuel needs are still met through imports, with 54% of the supply coming from Singapore.
"It’s ironic and embarrassing that our beloved country still imports 54% of its fuel consumption. And do you know where we import it from? Singapore," Bahlil stated at an event at The Westin Jakarta Hotel on Thursday (January 30, 2025).
He pointed out that Singapore does not have its own oil fields, yet Indonesia continues to rely on fuel imports from the country.
"We are importing oil from a country that doesn’t even have its own oil reserves. And the price is the same as oil from the Middle East," he remarked.
Bahlil disclosed that Indonesia's fuel imports have now reached 1 million barrels per day. This situation is in stark contrast to the 1996-1997 period, when Indonesia was exporting the same amount.
During that time, Indonesia’s oil and gas production (lifting) reached 1.6 million barrels per day, while domestic consumption stood at only 600,000 barrels per day. However, by 2024, national oil and gas production had declined sharply to just 600,000 barrels per day.
"Now, we are importing 1 million barrels per day. This is the complete opposite of what happened in 1996-1997. It makes us wonder—does our country really not have oil anymore?" Bahlil questioned.
In response to this issue, he emphasized the need for improved oil and gas management through three key strategies. First, reactivating idle oil wells. Second, optimizing existing wells using Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technology.
"Third, there are around 300 wells that have completed exploration but have not yet entered the Plan of Development (PoD). These must be addressed immediately," he asserted.
