Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan announced on Thursday that Indonesia will launch its own electric car brand in 2025 or 2026 at the latest.

Pandjaitan said the plan had the support of President Joko Widodo. To make it a reality, the government will form a research team led by a professor from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). The team will bring together experts from various Indonesian universities, including Universitas Indonesia and Universitas Gadjah Mada.

Pandjaitan also said that Indonesia is attracting interest from various electric car manufacturers, including Geely. Geely has expressed its willingness to invest in Indonesia and produce electric cars with an Indonesian brand.

In addition to Geely, there are dozens of other electric car manufacturers that are also interested in investing in Indonesia. Some of them are BYD, Stellantis, Chery, Tesla, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi, Volkswagen Group, BMW Group, Mercedes-Benz, GAC Group, Volvo, and Changan Auto.

Currently, there are only two companies that are already producing pure electric cars in Indonesia, namely Wuling Motors and Hyundai.

The government aims to make Indonesia one of the world's leading electric car production centers. By having its own electric car brand, Indonesia will have a stronger position in global competition.
