The government has officially responded to the demonstrations that escalated into riots on Thursday and Friday (August 28–29), which shook Jakarta. Authorities hope the situation will not drag on and disrupt the nation’s economic activity.
Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Susiwijono Moegiarso, stated that President Prabowo Subianto’s message was clear: the public is urged to remain calm, and all aspirations will be recorded and followed up by the government.
“We hope this will have a positive impact and that developments on the ground can be managed and remain conducive, preventing further effects on the economy,” Susi told reporters at his office in Central Jakarta, Friday (8/29/2025).
Regarding the decline in the Composite Stock Price Index (IHSG) and the rupiah, Susi considered it a reasonable response to the current situation, as stability is a key factor for investors. He expressed hope for improvement so that the government’s economic stimulus could positively influence growth in the third quarter of 2025.
“In line with our target, we expect higher economic growth in the third quarter, with only one month left—September. We will ensure that all economic stimulus programs are executed effectively to boost growth in Q3,” he added.
The riots stemmed from demonstrations starting Thursday and continuing into Friday, following the death of an online motorcycle taxi driver who was run over by a Brimob tactical vehicle in Pejompongan, Central Jakarta. The incident triggered widespread condemnation of the security forces’ repressive actions.
Susiwijono further noted that political and security uncertainty could potentially harm the investment climate. The domestic financial market had already responded with a downturn, while business players demanded certainty to keep goods distribution and production activities running smoothly.
“Political and security stability is crucial for both domestic and foreign investors. We must ensure that this situation does not affect perceptions of Indonesia’s economic competitiveness,” Susi emphasized.
