Location tracking apps have become quite popular recently. Typically, these apps are used by parents to monitor their children's whereabouts to enhance safety and security.

Instead of feeling disturbed by tracking apps, millions of teenagers express a desire to have their locations monitored by their parents. They don't feel like they are being watched all day but rather safe. In case of any unwanted incidents, their family members would be the first to know.

In a survey conducted by the location tracking app company Life360, titled "For Gen Z, (Location Sharing is Caring)," Generation Z individuals aged 11 to 26 have revealed their habit of sharing their locations with family members to enhance their sense of security.

This survey involved at least 1,200 adult respondents in the United States. Approximately 54 percent of them consider it important for parents to confirm their children's willingness to share their locations at all times.

The primary focus of this research is on parents using location tracking apps on their children. Parents are the ones who download the tracking apps, and the children who share their locations with their parents also respond positively.

As many as 94 percent of teenagers acknowledge the numerous benefits of sharing their location with family members. Over half of the respondents feel that location tracking apps can increase their sense of security when they are outside their parents' reach.

Life360 has also noted an increase in app downloads in the United States since 2021. Their monthly active user count has reached 33 million in the U.S. and 20 million globally.

In addition to Life360, teenagers are mentioned to share their locations using apps like Apple's FindMy, Google's Family Link, Snapchat's Snap Map, and smartwatches equipped with GPS features. The percentage breakdown of app usage is not provided.

In essence, the popularity of these tracking apps has had a positive impact on both parents and children. Generation Z individuals reveal that they keep the "Location" feature on their smartphones active all the time.

A total of 87 percent of respondents always share their locations when driving long distances, 77 percent when attending events, concerts, or festivals, 78 percent when going to parties or on dates, and 80 percent when going to potentially dangerous places. Even 72 percent of female respondents admit that sharing their location positively affects their physical well-being.

Driven by Concerns Other findings also show that 94 percent of respondents benefit from location sharing features. This practice has become a part of their upbringing, starting from an early age, providing them with comfort, safety, and freedom.

"As a digital native generation that has grown up sharing their locations with family members, Generation Z has indirectly become accustomed to the benefits, including a sense of security, comfort, freedom, and shows that this generation is the one that shares their location with parents the most, at 56 percent," the research report states.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal, a 16-year-old teenager admitted to having fears and concerns when going out. That's why they want their parents to know about all their activities outside the house.
