DIGIVESTASI - Recently, DeepSeek R1 has become a hot topic as a serious competitor to ChatGPT. So, what exactly is DeepSeek R1?
DeepSeek, a China-based AI-powered chatbot application, is now capturing attention as a major competitor to companies like Meta AI and ChatGPT.
According to a BBC report on Monday (January 27, 2025), this application has reached the top position as the most downloaded app on the App Store in the US, UK, and China since its initial release in 2023.
The rise in DeepSeek's popularity signals a challenge to the US's dominance, which was previously seen as the leader in the AI industry.
Unlike its competitors, DeepSeek uses advanced chips that are not imported from the US, allowing the creation of an AI application with lower computational demands and more cost-efficient operations. This innovation is predicted to revolutionize the existing AI industry and threaten the position of major US AI companies like OpenAI.
What is DeepSeek?
DeepSeek is a startup founded in Hangzhou, China, in 2023 by Liang Wenfeng, through an AI-based company called High-Flyer. Liang, born in 1985, holds a degree in electronic and information engineering from Zhejiang University.
Since its establishment in 2015, High-Flyer has focused on advanced computing to analyze financial data. However, in 2023, Liang decided to shift the company's focus towards creating DeepSeek, an initiative aimed at developing innovative AI models. The company was founded with a registered capital of just 10 million yuan (around IDR 22.3 billion), according to data from the Tianyancha company database.
Nvidia has also praised DeepSeek's success. "DeepSeek represents a major step in AI development and an exceptional example in terms of accelerating testing times," said Nvidia in an official statement sent to CBS News. Nvidia added that DeepSeek's achievements show how new models can be developed using techniques that leverage existing models and comply with export control regulations. However, Nvidia also reminded that AI inference requires large amounts of GPUs and high-performance networks to function optimally.
