Apple officially hosted a special event at Apple Park on Tuesday (Sept 9) to unveil the iPhone 17 lineup. Described as the “most ambitious series” in iPhone history, the new generation introduces major changes in design, camera systems, and model options.

iPhone 17 Air: The Super-Thin Slim Successor

Apple has discontinued the Plus model and replaced it with the iPhone 17 Air. This device is claimed to be the thinnest iPhone ever, measuring just 6.25 mm—thinner than the iPhone 6, which was once infamous for the “bendgate” controversy.

However, the thin profile comes with a drawback: a smaller battery capacity of just 3,149mAh, lower than the iPhone 16. Reports suggest Apple may reintroduce the MagSafe Battery Pack to offset this limitation.

Lineup and Screen Sizes

Here is the full iPhone 17 lineup:

  • iPhone 17 – 6.3 inches

  • iPhone 17 Air – 6.6 inches

  • iPhone 17 Pro – 6.3 inches

  • iPhone 17 Pro Max (rumored to be named iPhone 17 Ultra) – 6.9 inches

All models feature LTPO 120Hz displays, although adaptive ProMotion is expected to remain exclusive to the Pro versions.

Bold New Design and Colors

Apple has redesigned the rear camera layout. The iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max now sport a full-width horizontal bump, replacing the square-shaped design used since the iPhone 11 Pro.

The Pro models also debut new colors such as orange, while the iPhone 17 Air will be available in light blue and pale gold.

Cameras: Major Upgrades Front and Back

Every iPhone 17 model now includes a 24MP front camera—double the resolution of the previous 12MP. The iPhone 17 Air carries a single 48MP rear camera, while the Pro Max is expected to be the first iPhone with three 48MP lenses (wide, ultra-wide, and telephoto periscope/Tetraprism).

Other rumors suggest dual video recording up to 8K will be available exclusively on Pro models.

A19 Chipset and Larger RAM

All iPhone 17 models are powered by the A19 chip, with the Pro versions equipped with the A19 Pro built on TSMC’s 3nm process. The standard version comes with 8GB RAM, while the Air, Pro, and Pro Max step up to 12GB.

The Pro Max is rumored to drop the 128GB option, starting instead at 256GB and going up to 1TB.

iOS 26: A New Era of Interface

The iPhone 17 lineup runs iOS 26, featuring the new Liquid Glass theme with transparent visuals and floating menus. Other features include a standalone Games app, spam-blocking tools for Messages and Phone, and estimated charging time indicators.

Bigger Batteries (Except the Air)

The iPhone 17 Pro Max boasts the largest iPhone battery to date at 5,088mAh. The Pro increases to 4,252mAh, while the standard model has 3,962mAh. The only exception is the iPhone 17 Air, which comes with a smaller battery expected to struggle with all-day use.

Apple has also improved charging speeds with the Qi 2.2 standard, with the Pro Max supporting up to 35W. Reverse wireless charging for AirPods and Apple Watch may also be included.

Pricing and Availability

Pre-orders for the iPhone 17 are expected to begin on September 12, with official sales starting September 19. Here are the rumored global prices:

  • iPhone 17: from $799

  • iPhone 17 Air: $899

  • iPhone 17 Pro: $1,099

  • iPhone 17 Pro Max/Ultra: $1,299

Closing Note

The iPhone 17 series reflects Apple’s new ambition to deliver devices that are thinner, more powerful, and more expensive. From the ultra-slim iPhone 17 Air to the Pro Max with Tetraprism cameras, Apple is clearly reinforcing its dominance in the premium smartphone market.
