DIGIVESTASI - Malaysian PM Discusses Crypto Regulatory Framework with Binance Founder and UAE Officials
Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim recently held a meeting with Binance founder Changpeng Zhao and several officials from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to discuss the potential framework for cryptocurrency regulation. This report was shared by the New Straits Times on Tuesday.
"I have had extensive discussions with the leadership of Abu Dhabi and Changpeng Zhao, one of the founders of the world's largest cryptocurrency platform, Binance," Anwar said. He added that he had instructed the central bank and the Malaysian Ministry of Finance to study digital finance in order to avoid falling behind while also protecting the public's interests.
"This development is happening very quickly, which demands that we act as fast as possible. Malaysia must not be left behind while stuck in the old financial system," Anwar emphasized.
According to Anwar, this initiative is a major step that will bring about a radical shift from traditional approaches. During the same meeting, UAE officials expressed their willingness to collaborate with Malaysia in developing a regulatory approach in the crypto sector.
"We need to discuss this in detail, move away from old business models, and give new meaning to digital finance policies," he said.
Anwar also stated that Malaysian authorities, including the Ministry of Finance, the Securities Commission, and Bank Negara Malaysia, would conduct a comprehensive study before implementing any policies. He stressed the importance of addressing any concerns that might arise, as well as training the workforce and enhancing competencies in digital finance.
