DIGIVESTASI - Nissan's distributor in Indonesia, PT Indomobil Sukses Internasional Tbk. (IMAS), has confirmed active communication between Honda Motor Co. and Nissan Motor Co. regarding a merger plan between the two Japanese automotive companies. IMAS President Director Jusak Kertowidjojo stated on Tuesday (December 24) that the information is accurate, as reported by CNBC Indonesia.

However, Jusak clarified that, to date, there has been no official discussion between Nissan Global and IMAS regarding the potential impact of this merger. In Indonesia, Honda vehicles are marketed by PT Honda Prospect Motor (HPM), which handles production and distribution.

"There has been no discussion between the company and Nissan Global concerning the planned corporate action by Nissan Global and Honda," Jusak explained.

He added that the potential impact of the merger on Nissan's operations in Indonesia, both in the short and long term, remains uncertain. IMAS has also not received detailed information on how this merger would be implemented for both brands in Indonesia.

Earlier, Honda and Nissan announced plans to form a strategic partnership by establishing a new holding company in 2026. According to a Nikkei Asia report, the plan also includes potentially integrating Mitsubishi Motors into the holding company, which would create one of the largest automotive groups in the world. With Mitsubishi Motors’ participation, the group is projected to become the third largest globally, following Toyota and Volkswagen, with estimated sales exceeding 8 million units annually.

The synergy between the two companies is designed to encompass collaboration in various areas, such as supplying hybrid vehicles from Honda to Nissan and jointly utilizing Nissan's car assembly facilities in the UK.

Seven Key Points of the Honda-Nissan Synergy:

  1. Standardization of Vehicle Platforms
The collaboration on vehicle platforms aims to reduce production costs while enhancing competitiveness. Standardization will cover internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, hybrids (HEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), and electric vehicles (EVs).

  2. Research and Development (R&D) Synergy
Integration in R&D will focus on software-based technologies and vehicle applications, enabling faster innovation at lower costs.

  3. Optimization of Manufacturing Facilities
By sharing production facilities, both companies expect to improve operational efficiency, maximize plant capacity, and reduce carbon emissions.

  4. Strengthening the Supply Chain
Integrating supply chains will enhance the efficiency of component procurement, supporting a more competitive and streamlined production process.

  5. Operational Efficiency
Combining systems and operational processes such as back-office functions can cut costs and improve overall efficiency.

  6. Financial Management Synergy
Financial integration will optimize marketing, logistics, and production operations, supporting the sustainability of vehicle businesses.

  7. Development of Skilled Human Resources
Technical knowledge exchanges among employees will be prioritized to address the transformation towards electric vehicles and smart technologies.

The merger is expected to strengthen the competitive position of Honda, Nissan, and Mitsubishi in the global market and drive innovation toward a more advanced and sustainable mobility future.
