Information circulating on social media suggests that Tokopedia may be shut down and replaced by TikTok Shop. The claim was first shared by the X account @ecommurz, which is widely known for posting updates related to the startup ecosystem.
The account cited alleged internal sources stating that the Tokopedia app would be discontinued, while TikTok Shop would operate through a separate standalone application. In response, a TikTok spokesperson said the company remains committed to investing in Tokopedia and Indonesia as part of its long-term strategy to support sustainable growth and innovation.
Speculation about Tokopedia’s closure emerged about a week after TikTok reassigned Melissa Sisa Juminto from her role as CEO to a position as commissioner. Melissa had led Tokopedia since its early days after the company was founded by William Tanuwijaya, who is now part of the GoTo Group.
Previously, GoTo sold a 75% stake in Tokopedia to ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, in January 2024. In addition, based on information obtained by CNBC Indonesia, the post-acquisition process resulted in layoffs affecting approximately 420 employees as of August 2025. Of that total, 180 employees were laid off in July, followed by another 240 in August.
The workforce reductions reportedly impacted multiple divisions, including information technology, customer service, fulfillment teams, and warehouse operations. Meanwhile, TikTok has also faced reports of offering special incentives in the form of advertising subsidies of up to 30% for Chinese merchants selling on TikTok Shop, while similar benefits were not extended to Indonesian sellers.
According to Sensor Tower, Tokopedia currently ranks as the third most downloaded retail application in Indonesia. TikTok, categorized as a social media platform, remains the most downloaded app in the country. Despite its social media classification, TikTok records the highest transaction value in Indonesia, followed in revenue rankings by Google One, Vidio, Facebook, and CapCut.
