Israel and Iran resumed reciprocal attacks on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, marking the fifth consecutive day of violence in what is now considered the most intense confrontation between the two nations in their history. The escalating conflict is fueling international fears of a prolonged war that could destabilize the broader Middle East.

Here’s a summary of the latest developments as reported by CNBC Indonesia via AFP:

Rising Casualties

The death toll continues to climb on both sides. Iran's Ministry of Health reported at least 224 fatalities and over 1,200 injuries, while Israeli authorities stated that 24 people had died and 592 were injured.

In an update on Monday night, Israel struck Iran’s state television headquarters, forcing a news anchor to flee live on air.

Israel also claimed to have eliminated several high-ranking military commanders and nuclear scientists. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Monday that Israel was "taking out" Iranian security leaders "one by one."

Netanyahu Targets Khamenei

Netanyahu asserted that Israel's military operations were "reshaping the Middle East" and that the campaign aims to bring "radical change" in Iran.

He outlined three primary goals: dismantling Iran's nuclear program, destroying its ballistic missile production capacity, and eliminating the "axis of terrorism"—a reference to Iran-backed militant groups across the region.

Netanyahu emphasized that Israel would do "whatever it takes" to meet these objectives and is closely coordinating with the United States. He also did not rule out the possibility of targeting Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Large-Scale Evacuations

U.S. President Donald Trump urged residents of Tehran to evacuate, posting on social media: "Everyone must evacuate Tehran immediately!" without elaborating.

China also advised its citizens to leave Israel "as soon as possible," citing escalating tensions.

Earlier, Israel issued an evacuation order for Tehran's northern District 3, where Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB is located, which was later struck. IRIB resumed its live broadcast shortly after the attack.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei called the strike a "war crime" and demanded urgent action from the United Nations Security Council. In retaliation, Iran issued evacuation warnings targeting Israeli news outlets.

Israel Claims Missile Strike Success

Israel's military stated it had destroyed roughly one-third of Iran’s surface-to-surface missile launchers. Military spokesperson Effie Defrin claimed Israel had now achieved full air superiority over Tehran.

Iranian military spokesman Reza Sayyad said their targets in Israel included "sensitive and strategic security sites" as well as homes of military commanders and scientists. One confirmed target was a major oil refinery in the coastal city of Haifa, according to an Israeli official after military censorship was lifted.

Residential areas in both countries have suffered deadly strikes, raising fears globally of a potential World War III.

China–Turkey Diplomacy

Despite the escalation, global leaders are urging an immediate ceasefire.

China called on Iran and Israel to "urgently" reduce tensions and prevent the region from descending into further chaos.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told his Iranian counterpart by phone that Ankara is ready to act as a "facilitator" to resolve the conflict. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said there was "consensus for de-escalation" among G7 leaders at a summit in Canada.

French President Emmanuel Macron urged both sides to stop attacks on civilians, warning that attempts to overthrow Iran’s clerical regime would be a “strategic mistake.” Meanwhile, Trump told reporters at the G7 that “Iran will not win this war, and they need to talk... before it’s too late.”

Nuclear Facility Targets

Netanyahu stated that Israel’s operations are aimed at neutralizing the "existential threat" posed by Iran’s nuclear and missile programs. The bombing campaign followed warnings from the UN nuclear watchdog regarding Iran's atomic activities.

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), said Monday there was “no indication of physical damage” to the underground portion of Iran’s uranium enrichment facility at Natanz, and that radiation levels near the site remained “within normal range.” Previously, the IAEA confirmed that the above-ground infrastructure at Natanz had sustained significant damage.
