DIGIVESTASI - Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (Mendikbudristek) Nadiem Makarim has confirmed the cancellation of the planned increase in Single Tuition Fee (UKT). This announcement came after Nadiem met with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi).
Nadiem stated that he had heard complaints from various parties and committed to reassessing the increase in UKT at various public universities. He emphasized that for this year, no students would be affected by the increase in UKT.
"For this year, no students will be affected by the increase in UKT," said Nadiem after meeting with Jokowi at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta, on Monday (May 27).
The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology will also consider each request from public universities to raise the UKT in the future. Nadiem stressed that any increase in UKT must be done carefully and based on principles of justice and reasonableness.
"Even if there is an increase in UKT, it must be based on principles of justice and reasonableness, and that's what we will implement," he said.
Previously, the increase in UKT rates had sparked controversy at various public universities. Students at several campuses even staged protests rejecting the increase in UKT.
The DPR (House of Representatives) has summoned Nadiem to explain the allocation of a budget of Rp665 trillion. This is aimed at helping the public understand the function of education and the steps taken by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology to address the high cost of education.
