DIGIVESTASI - President Prabowo Subianto revealed that Indonesian palm oil commodities are highly valued in the global market. He even mentioned that Europe once experienced confusion when it was threatened with not being able to obtain palm oil from Indonesia.

This refers to the European Union's policy that had issued anti-deforestation regulations, which banned imports of commodities that could harm forests, including palm oil. The Indonesian government threatened to stop palm oil exports to European countries.

Prabowo stated that if the supply of Indonesian palm oil were to be stopped, various industries in Europe would face major difficulties. This is because many products are highly dependent on palm oil as a raw material, such as the chocolate, detergent, and cosmetics industries.

“Europe wanted to limit it, but they ended up getting confused. In my opinion, ‘oh thank you, we won’t sell to you,’ but they panicked instead. All their chocolate industries became a mess, because chocolate is made from palm oil. The same goes for products like detergents and cosmetics, they were confused,” Prabowo said during his speech at the National Development Planning Consultation for the 2025-2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN), on Monday (30/12/2024).

Regarding the deforestation allegations against palm oil, Prabowo denied them. According to him, these allegations are unfounded and should not be feared.

“We don’t need to be afraid of those accusations about deforestation. Actually, palm oil trees also absorb carbon dioxide. So why are we being accused like this? Those are just accusations from people who don’t understand,” he explained.
