DIGIVESTASI - The number of poor people in Indonesia is recorded at 24.06 million, according to the National Economic Survey (Susenas) conducted in September 2024 and announced by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) on January 15, 2025. This figure represents 8.57% of the total population of Indonesia, a decrease compared to March 2024, when the number was 25.22 million or 9.03% of the total population.
Acting Head of BPS, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, explained that the majority of poor households are headed by individuals working in the agricultural sector in informal employment. BPS data shows that 47.34% of poor households have a head of household working in agriculture, while 61.34% of these heads are employed in the informal sector.
In addition to working in agriculture and the informal sector, most poor household heads have low levels of education, with 64.15% having only completed or not completed primary education (SD).
Amalia added that overall, poor households in Indonesia are dominated by those with heads of household working in agriculture, in informal employment, and with an education level of primary school or below.
In September 2024, the average poor household in Indonesia consisted of 4.71 people. As such, the average poverty line per poor household reached Rp2,803,590 per month, an increase of 0.62% compared to the figure in March 2024, which was Rp2,786,415 per month.
The poverty line reflects the minimum amount a household must spend to meet its basic needs in order to not be categorized as a poor household.
Based on geographic distribution, the majority of poor people are in Java, with a total of 12.62 million people, or about 52.45% of Indonesia's total poor population. Sumatra has the second-largest number of poor people, with 5.25 million people, or 21.82%, followed by Bali and Nusa Tenggara with 1.94 million people (8.06%), Sulawesi with 1.88 million people (7.82%), Maluku and Papua with 1.46 million people (6.07%), and Kalimantan, with the lowest number, at 910,000 people (3.78%).
Based on provinces, East Java has the highest number of poor people, reaching 3.89 million, followed by West Java with 3.66 million, Central Java with 3.39 million, and East Nusa Tenggara with 1.10 million. The provinces with the lowest number of poor people are North Kalimantan with 41,110 people, the Bangka Belitung Islands with 78,580 people, North Maluku with 79,690 people, and Southwest Papua with 96,810 people.
