DIGIVESTASI - Northvolt Faces Financial Crisis, Files for Bankruptcy Protection in the U.S., Swedish electric vehicle battery manufacturer Northvolt is facing a serious financial crisis and has filed for bankruptcy protection in the United States. The move aims to restructure its debt and reorganize its business operations. In an official statement, Northvolt stated that the filing would provide the company an opportunity to realign its business scale with customer needs and establish a more sustainable foundation.

“This Chapter 11 filing is designed to help Northvolt implement its strategic decisions, including reshaping the scope of its business and prioritizing commitments to customers,” the company said in a report cited by AFP on Friday, November 22, 2024.

What is Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection?

Chapter 11, part of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code, allows companies to reorganize under U.S. legal frameworks. This protection is available for businesses or individuals with unsecured debts of at least USD 336,000 or secured debts of at least USD 1.01 million.

Northvolt’s Restructuring Measures

As part of its restructuring efforts, Northvolt has cut approximately 1,600 jobs, representing a quarter of its workforce. The company has also halted the expansion of its business locations due to financial pressures and declining market demand.

“The bankruptcy process allows Northvolt to secure access to new funding sources, including USD 145 million in cash collateral,” the company stated. Additionally, one of Northvolt’s major customers has committed to providing USD 100 million in new financing to support the company’s operations through a debtor-in-possession (DIP) financing scheme.

Northvolt's Role in Europe’s Battery Ambitions

Northvolt was previously considered a cornerstone of Europe’s ambition to catch up with China and the U.S. in battery cell production, a key component of environmentally friendly electric vehicles. While Europe currently accounts for just 3% of global battery production, the region aims to capture 25% of the market by the end of this decade.

Impact on the Automotive Industry

Northvolt’s crisis has had widespread implications for the automotive industry. In May, disruptions at the company delayed production at several electric vehicle factories. One major consequence was the cancellation of a USD 2.2 billion contract with BMW.
