Kominfo Utilizes Artificial Intelligence to Block Online Gambling Sites

The Minister of Communication and Informatics of the Republic of Indonesia, Budi Arie Setiabudi, revealed that the Ministry is employing artificial intelligence (AI) technology to combat online gambling sites, often referred to as "judol." During a press conference on the "Developments in Online Gambling Management" held at the Ministry of Communication and Informatics building in Central Jakarta on October 20, 2023, Minister Budi Arie Setiabudi elaborated on their efforts.

 

Minister Budi Arie explained that they have harnessed AI to continuously monitor websites that potentially contain online gambling. Once these websites are identified, AI is responsible for blocking access to those associated with online gambling. Budi Arie Setiabudi stated, "AI can monitor, identify online gambling sites, perform verifications, and execute blocking."

 

Furthermore, during the same occasion, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics announced that they have taken decisive action by disconnecting and blocking 425,206 pieces of content related to online gambling between July 18 and October 18, 2023. These online gambling contents were categorized into various types, including websites or internet protocol (IP) addresses, totaling 237,096 contents, file sharing amounting to 17,235 contents, and social media with 171,175 contents.

 

According to Budi Arie Setiabudi, the Ministry has also sought cooperation from internet service providers (ISPs) and mobile operators to enhance their efforts in combating online gambling. One of the measures taken involves ensuring accurate synchronization within the database of websites containing gambling-related content.

 

Budi Arie Setiabudi emphasized the importance of promptly acting on the requests for access termination made by the Ministry.
