DIGIVESTASI - In the Future of Jobs Report 2025 released on January 8, 2025, the World Economic Forum (WEF) projects that several frontline jobs will experience the largest growth by 2030. These jobs include fields in agriculture, delivery drivers, construction workers, sales personnel, and workers in the food processing sector.

Jobs in the care economy, such as nursing professionals, social workers, counselors, and personal care assistants, are also expected to grow significantly in the next five years. The same growth trend applies to professions like secondary and higher education teachers.

On the other hand, technology-related jobs are identified as the fastest-growing. Examples include big data specialists, financial technology engineers, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning experts, as well as software and application developers.

Jobs focused on green energy transition are also among the fastest-growing sectors, including electric and autonomous vehicle specialists, environmental engineers, and renewable energy engineers.

However, some job sectors are expected to experience a drastic decrease in demand by 2030, such as administrative workers, secretaries, cashiers, ticket officers, bank tellers, postal service officers, and data entry clerks.

On average, workers are likely to face changes or eliminations of 39% of their skills between 2025-2030. However, this figure is lower compared to the previous report, which noted a 44% change in skills in 2023, and 57% in 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Analytical thinking is still regarded as the most sought-after skill by employers. By 2025, about 70% of companies will prioritize this skill, followed by resilience, flexibility, agility, leadership, and social influence.

Skills in artificial intelligence and big data top the list as the fastest-growing competencies, followed by technological literacy and cybersecurity skills.

In the report, Saadia Zahidi, Managing Director of the World Economic Forum, states that transformational innovation, particularly in generative AI (GenAI), has a significant impact on industries and jobs. However, these changes come with challenges such as economic turbulence, geo-economic tensions, climate change, and the aging population.

Saadia adds that the Future of Jobs Report 2025 is based on a survey of over 1,000 employers representing 14 million workers in 22 industry sectors. The survey also involved 55 economists who provided perspectives on job trends until 2030.

Of the many macro trends noted, the expansion of digital access is the most transformative trend, with 60% of employers stating that it will impact their businesses by 2030. Other trends include technological advancements such as AI, automation, robotics, and energy transitions, which affect job roles in various ways.

Another emerging trend is the rising cost of living, climate change, and demographic shifts. While the aging population triggers an increased need for healthcare workers, countries with a growing working-age population will require more educators.

Geo-economic shifts and geopolitical tensions also accelerate business model transformation across several organizations, with over 23% of employers highlighting the impact of trade policies and relations between the United States and China.

In response to this report, Teguh Dartanto, a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Indonesia, stated that the growth of jobs, especially in conventional sectors such as agriculture and construction, is still difficult to replace with technology. However, Indonesia needs to consider the development of high-level digital and managerial sectors.

Meanwhile, Harry Seldadyo from Atma Jaya Catholic University believes that the trend of business transformation and its impact on the labor market is a natural and long-standing process. He emphasized that Indonesia needs concrete data regarding the number of affected workers and those who will be absorbed in new sectors.

According to Harry, organizations like Apindo and Kadin are expected to estimate the labor market conditions in Indonesia, while trade unions are urged to develop strategies to improve their members’ skills in line with market demands.
