DIGIVESTASI - The US is concerned that China is misusing artificial intelligence (AI) technology. In response, Beijing officials slammed Washington for its restrictions and pressure on AI technology. This happened a day after a meeting to discuss technology in Geneva, Switzerland. It is known that there was a closed meeting between high-level US and Chinese envoys.

The meeting discussed AI risks and how to manage them. At the heart of the conversation is the tension between Beijing and Washington regarding technological advances that have long been a conflict in the bilateral relations between the two countries.  

National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson revealed that China and the United States exchanged views on their approaches to AI security and risk management in a discussion. Beijing said the two sides exchanged views thoroughly, professionally and constructively.

 The first talks between the US and China on AI resulted from last November's meeting between President Joe Biden and Xi Jinping in San Francisco. 

“The United States emphasizes the importance of ensuring safe, secure, and trustworthy AI systems to realize the benefits of AI and continues to build global consensus on this basis,” Watson said, quoted by APNews, Saturday (18 May 2024). . Watson added that the United States has also expressed concern about AI abuse, particularly in China. However, he did not specify the type of abuse or other actors behind it. 

At the same time, Beijing expressed its firm stance against US restrictions and pressure on the country in the field of artificial intelligence, A statement from the North American and Pacific Affairs Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Quoc, wrote in an article posted on social media networks. 

Helen Toner, an analyst at the Center for Security and Emerging Technologies at Georgetown, said the determinant of the success of these talks is whether or not the outcome of the meeting can be sustained in the future.

Some US lawmakers have expressed concerns that China could support the use of AI-generated deepfakes to spread political disinformation. However, unlike the US, China has passed a series of new laws prohibiting manipulative AI fakes.
