DIGIVESTASI - China Develops High-Resolution Laser Transmission Technology, Surpassing Starlink in 6G Development, China has successfully developed high-resolution laser transmission technology from satellites to the ground, claimed to be a key step in advancing 6G technology. This breakthrough is regarded as a significant leap in communication technology and has been described as surpassing the capabilities of Elon Musk's Starlink transmission.

Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co., which manages Jilin-1, the largest commercial sub-meter resolution remote-sensing satellite constellation, reported that its laser data transmission trial achieved speeds of up to 100 Gbps last weekend. This speed is equivalent to 1,000 times faster than the current average 5G download speed of approximately 100 Mbps or more.

This transmission speed is also 10 times higher than the previous record set less than a year ago. The technology was tested between a ground station located on a moving truck and one of the 117 satellites in the Jilin-1 constellation.

According to Wang Hanghang, Head of Ground Station Laser Communication Technology at Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co., this achievement highlights the superiority of Chang Guang’s satellite technology over Starlink.

“Starlink, owned by Elon Musk, has introduced inter-satellite communication systems using lasers, but they have not yet implemented laser-based satellite-to-ground communication technology. While we believe they have the capability, we have already begun large-scale application,” Wang stated, as quoted by the South China Morning Post on Saturday, January 4, 2025.

Future Expansion Plans

Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co. aims to further expand testing and equip the entire Jilin-1 constellation with high-resolution laser communication technology.

“We plan to deploy this laser communication technology to all satellites in the Jilin-1 constellation, targeting connections for up to 300 satellites by 2027,” the company announced.

Global Space Technology Milestone

According to EurAsian, China’s advancements in space laser communication mark a significant milestone in the global competition for space technology. It is believed that this technology will have a profound impact on the future of communication and information technology.

Unlike conventional radio frequencies widely used today, laser-based communication signals, which are invisible light signals, can transmit data at much higher speeds.

In recent years, the development of laser communication has surged significantly. In 2022, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) achieved a breakthrough with transmission speeds of 100 Gbps via laser. This was followed in 2023 by NASA's TeraByte InfraRed Delivery (TBIRD) system, also developed by MIT, which set a new record at 200 Gbps.

China’s latest accomplishment pushes the boundaries further, underlining its growing influence in the realm of space and communication technologies.
