DIGIVESTASI - Starlink recently announced that its internet service will be available for free worldwide, but only for users in emergency situations. In response to this news, the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII) shared its perspective.

"I haven't discussed much about this free service, but as far as I know, there’s no such thing as a truly free service," said APJII Chairman Muhammad Arif Angga during the launch event of the APJII documentary film *'Derang Daring'* in Jakarta, Friday (August 30, 2024).

Arif explained that the free internet service from Starlink is most likely limited to emergency situations. Even in its home country, Starlink offers emergency call services.

"If it’s necessary during emergencies, perhaps it’s possible, but for everyday internet use, it doesn't make sense. This service is only for emergency conditions," he clarified.

Recently, Elon Musk announced plans to provide free Starlink services globally, including in Indonesia, specifically for those in emergency situations. These emergencies include being lost in remote areas, experiencing natural disasters, or being in war zones.

This initiative is also intended to promote Starlink's direct-to-cell service, which allows internet connectivity directly to mobile phones. However, Starlink is still awaiting approval for this service from the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
