DIGIVESTASI - Telkom, through its subsidiary PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia Internasional (Telin), is developing a major project called Indonesia Cable Express (ICE). This Submarine Communication Cable System (SCCS) project is designed to connect Indonesia with various parts of the world. The project encompasses seven SCCS systems, which began in early 2023 and are scheduled for completion in 2028, with a total investment of USD 2.66 billion, or approximately IDR 41.19 trillion.
Budi Satria Dharma Purba, CEO of Telin, revealed that the ICE project has already entered the consortium formation phase, with six out of the seven systems having signed MoUs. "Currently, there are seven systems in progress, and six of them have signed consortium MoUs. We are also continuing to explore new market potentials beyond the ongoing and initiated projects," said Budi at the Bali Annual Telkom International Conference (BATIC) 2024 in Nusa Dua, Bali.
The ICE SCCS project aims to position Indonesia as a global hub in the Indo-Pacific region, recognizing the urgent need for digital services. A notable collaboration within this project is the partnership between Telin and Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH), which will connect Singapore, Batam, Jakarta, Surabaya, Balikpapan (IKN), Makassar, and Manado through the SCCS. This collaboration also includes infrastructure expansion by connecting IOH and Telin’s Points of Presence (PoP) with ICE System 2, further strengthening the network.
Budi also mentioned that Telin is still seeking partners for the remaining system, which will connect Indonesia with Latin America. "The route to Latin America is in the early discussion stages, as it's quite a long route and requires many partners. We are still evaluating whether this route will lead to Chile or another country, depending on partner investment interest," he explained.
Here is the list of the seven Indonesia Cable Express (ICE) systems:
