DIGIVESTASI - Donald Trump revealed that Apple CEO Tim Cook called him to discuss the multi-billion-dollar fines imposed on Apple by the European Union. Trump made this statement during an appearance on the PBD Podcast and emphasized that if he were re-elected as president, he would not allow the EU to take advantage of U.S. companies, like Apple.
"Just a few hours ago, Tim Cook called me and said the EU had just fined us $15 billion (Rp231 trillion)," Trump said, as quoted by **The Verge** on Friday (October 18, 2024). In addition to the initial fine, Trump mentioned that Apple had received another $2 billion (Rp30 trillion) fine from the EU.
The penalties against Apple originated in March 2024 when the EU determined that the company had abused its dominance by restricting music streaming apps from informing customers about cheaper offers available outside of the App Store. After the EU won the lawsuit, Apple was ordered to pay a total of $17 billion (Rp262 trillion) in fines.
Trump also shared part of his conversation with Cook. "Tim told me that Europe relies on these fines to run their companies," he said. Trump further promised that he would not let the EU profit from American companies if he were re-elected as president.
Apple has not responded to these claims when contacted by The Verge.
During the interview, Trump also mentioned speaking with Google CEO Sundar Pichai about the large amount of negative news about him on the search engine. Additionally, Elon Musk recently spoke at one of Trump's rallies in Pennsylvania, while Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly called Trump several times over the summer.
